Performance of a range hood with three-sided air curtains

A range hood with three-sided air curtains surrounding is proposed. The proposed range hood is constructed in lab for tests. Through flow visualization and tracer gas concentration measurement, the suitable air curtain operating parameters are determined. Then the breathing zone concentration and the exhaust particle concentration are measured. The time-weighted average concentration and the capture efficiency are also calculated. The results reveal that the air curtain can effectively prevent spreading of the cooking particles. Compared with the hood without air curtain, the breathing zone concentration is much reduced. The capture efficiency of the range hood is increased by at least 22%.
